Last spring we were able to see you in person. Now we are in real school, five days week. I am so happy to be back to normal, that even wearing a mask isn't half that bad. It isn't perfect, but it better!

Our first week an a half is going to touch on skills we will use throughout the year.

1. Students are to interview someone they know who remembers 9-11, the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States.

2. Students learned about the sinking of the Titanic.

Like 9-11---there were flaws in actual practices. Just as there was poor airport and airplane security, the Titanic did not carry enough lifeboats, nor was the ship built strong enough to withstand certain collisions.

<img alt="The Sinking of the R.M.S. Furthermore, the competition between Germany, England, and France, to have the fastest ocean liners contributed to culture of "speed" at the cost of all other safety precautions.

Like 9-11---which exposed the vulnerabilities of the United States to internal attacks, the Titanic exposed the myth of "unsinkable" and came to represent the decline of the British Empire.
On April 19th, she will be posting her new assignments for Grades 9 and Grades 10. Every Monday, the next assignment will be up.

Grade 9 will be learning about heroes of the 1920s, while Grade 10 will be learning about the Cambodian genocide. Both of these classes are studying interesting documents.

Students please try to complete your work for the next week by the following Monday. Many of you are getting your work in within the first few days....good for you!! The assignments are interesting and should be easy to complete.

This distance learning is very different from being in the classroom, but it is learning, and so trust me you will learn some things in the next few weeks! Mrs. Olsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06248224352761338022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703694816476330359.post-58237224544465994782020-04-11T21:14:00.005-07:002020-04-11T21:39:20.391-07:00Changes and NEW CLASS CODES!Last week, Mrs. Olsen emailed all her students and parents with their class code: but guess what...that was a needless step. It looks like the district created classes for her and populated them with her students. So we are back to square one. This time, however, I have been told that you are now all enrolled in my class instead of having to invite you in. I hope this is the case (fingers crossed)

I think that all of you are in my classes now---but I have put in the new class codes below, JUST IN CASE! This is a learning experience for her. Usually, she would just go down the hall and ask someone what was going on. BUT GUESS WHAT? She's now at home, like you, waiting this crisis out. Are we going through some sort of world changing event---yes we are! It is going to be very rough but hang in there.

In the meanwhile, distance learning will begin on Monday, April 13th. I have loaded in the assignments for all my classes. You can also click on 9th grade or 10th grade off to the side for a description of what is required of you this next week. All work for this week is due on the 20th. They include a viewing part (which is usually an easy to understand powerpoint) and encouragement to watch youtube videos to enhance and help to answer any question you might have. There is also two written assignments that will be mainly based on personal response.

You can also ask me any questions during my VIRTUAL OFFICE HOURS, which are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 2. Now I am not sure how this is going to work---but we will get better and better at communications. You may not be able to connect and I may be frazzled this week trying to connect wiht you. You can always email me directly. Just to show you I am trying to learn more technical skills, I am showing you a CREEPY HAND PHOTO of me typing this exact message into the computer!

On March 30th, there will be a district wide phone conference and a further phone conference with Sprague High School Staff and our principal Chad Barkes.

Throughout the past two weeks, there has been constant communication from Oregon Education, our school district superintendent, Christy Perry, and our Principal Mr. Barkes. Their concern for you as students is of great importance---both your physical and emotional wellness, and your educational progress. We are going to be working together to figure out how to relay some distance learning to you during this next month or so as we are quarantining ourselves during this epidemic.

I have also been very concerned about all my students---both the economic impact on your families and the isolation. Once we get up and running, I will do all I can to make education as interesting as possible. You have been wonderful students this year----so I hope that we can continue to connect through some of the supplemental assignments that will be made available to you.

Stay tuned for more!
In 10th grade history, students are learning about the American Indian Movement. This last summer I received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to study in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We were taken to the Taos Pueblo, outside of Taos, New Mexico to learn more about their sacred river, and its source, Taos Blue Lake.

Taos Blue Lake is in the mountains above the Pueblo. The setting is beautiful, and it is patrolled by Native Americans who try to keep the site sacred and pristine, for to them, it is the source of the Pueblo peoples.

During the disorganized and predatory time of reservations and land grabs, Taos Blue Lake ended up in the hands of the federal government. After years of advocating for the return of their lands, Richard Nixon signed the return of the lake to the Taos Pueblo. He said,
“this is a bill that represents justice, because in 1906 an injustice was done in which land involved in this bill, 48,000 acres, was taken from the Indians involved, the Taos Pueblo Indians. The Congress of the United States now returns that land to whom it belongs… I can’t think of anything more appropriate or any action that could make me more proud as President of the United States.” For this act, they revere him. If you google Taos Blue Lake, you will only find one picture. For the Taos people, it is so sacred, that they do not want it seen by those who are not of the tribe.

Everywhere in Europe in June, 1914, there was talk of tensions among the alliances. This time was also known as the "last summer" before World War I began.

It would be remembered with great nostalgia and sadness by those who survived World War I. Let's check in on what was happening during that time:

Coco Chanel had just opened up a second store in Paris, on the Rue Cambon...where there is a Chanel store even today.

Oskar Kokoschka, the painter, was finishing up his masterpiece, Bride of the Wind.

Sigmund Freud was writing his paper, "On Narcissim."

It was a beautiful June--but little did the peoples of Europe realize that by the end of the summer, over half a million Europeans would be dead and wounded in the opening month of the Great War.
In the years to follow, millions more would die. The end of the war brought a fractured peace treaty...which led to the rise of Hitler and yet another war. All who lived through both wars would say, that the last beautiful summer was that of 1914. Thirty years later, much of great European cities in Poland, Austria, and of course, Germany, lay in ruins.Mrs. Olsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06248224352761338022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703694816476330359.post-58823665469702625892019-12-18T09:52:00.004-08:002019-12-18T09:53:18.415-08:00Christmas Break---all students have study guide and answers are up until January 6th.
Earlier animal societies had been formed in Europe, but now Americans joined groups that were concerned about the treatment of animals: including domestic pets and livestock and transportation animals. Here is a picture of the Dorothea Dix Fountain in Boston that was created for horses to drink out of. Dorothea Dix was a popular supporter of animal rights, but she is best known for her pioneering work with the mentally ill.
Mrs. Olsen shares her home with Joey and Bumbles. They are not owned by her, but they live with her, and actually just kind of tolerate her.

The most famous cat was Petrarch's cat. Petrarch was an Italian poet, who was very attached to his cat. He actually wrote a poem to his cat, which has made that cat very famous. It was even put on a tomb. Mrs. Olsen did grow up in Salem, but her family dogs are buried out at the family farm near Turner. It makes her sad to think of her animals that have passed on, but happy to think they can hear the calls of the Canadian Geese in the fall as they fly over their final resting place. Many students also have animals and have adopted them from Humane Societies. Mrs. Olsen's two dogs are rescues.

She was copying the settlement house movement that began in England. In a crowded slum area called Toynbee Hall, social progressives created a community center that offered health care, cultural activities, and social supports for the poor.

Miss Addams bought Hull house, and soon, other homes were bought in the area. Around the Hull House neighborhood were crowded tenements, that might be called slums by today's standards. The Hull House/Settlement House movement grew to over 400 settlement houses. They were called this for a simple reason: They helped people get "SETTLED" into their new life in the United States.
When I visited Chicago, I went to Hull House and obtained copies of the maps that she had made of the people around the surrounding neighborhood. All the maps were color coded according to the background of the persons. The maps told some interesting things: the Irish lived by the Italians as they were both Catholic. The Polish lived by the Russians as they were neighbors in Europe.

Because many of the tenements had their occupants move out--only to be replaced by the same ethnic group, she invested the money to have the maps made up in so much detail. The maps are not just a valuable clue to the vibrant mix of immigrants in America---they also reveal the concern that Miss Adams had that she know all her neighbors and their needs.

In 1931, Jane Addams, a social worker, was awarded the highest award: The Nobel Peace Prize. This tremendous honor was criticized by some, for she was just considered a social worker. The Nobel Committee knew better. Jane Addams would be one of the great humanitarians of the 19th century.Mrs. Olsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06248224352761338022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703694816476330359.post-6678909143481480912019-11-04T10:57:00.000-08:002019-11-04T10:57:05.665-08:00Veteran's Day November 11th<h3 class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="background-color: #fff3db; color: #1b0431; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", sans-serif; font-size: 18.2px; font-weight: normal; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">

After teaching in Canada for 20 years, I came back and experienced my first American Veteran's day. Though I was born in Salem and attended Sprague, when I lived in Canada this was a day that was honored with respect and reverence.

For example, in almost every Canadian school there was an assembly about war and peace.

Almost everyone wore a fabric poppy to honor the soldiers who fell in the war. The Flanders poppies grew prolifically over the graves in the years just after the war. Of course, another Canadian also wrote the poem "In Flander's Fields."

The Canadians were also very proud of their victory along the Arras line in 1917 April 9th. This was the Battle of Vimy Ridge. I have been to the battlefield twice, and it is preserved as a park because the land was given to Canada for a memorial by France to honor the men who died there. Driving in the area of the Western Front is a bit sad, for just as there are fields of grain, there are also fields of graves. The Canadian graves have maple leafs on them. The memorial to the fallen soldiers is considered one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful of all the foreign monuments along the Western Front. The park still has the trenches and shell holes that are now covered in grass. A small flock of sheep is used to trim the grass as the undulations make it difficult for a traditional lawn mower.

In Salem, Oregon we even have Civil War veterans buried in our two pioneer cemeteries. We have a memorial to the medal of honor recipients, and we also have a World War II memorial and a World War II memiorial.

Norman Borlaug is responsible for much of the progress humanity has made against hunger. He was an outspoken advocated for the green revolution. He also had some things to say about organic food. Here is a quote: If people want to believe that the organic food has better nutritive value, it's up to them to make that decision. .If some consumers believe that it's better from the point of view of their health to have organic food, God bless them. I look forward to a great year studying history with you. You might feel like these young kids that are posing in the stocks at Colonial Williamsburg, but be honest, you are happy to be at school. Right?
I hope you all had a great summer. Mrs. Olsen did some projects, as usual. She built a fence, tiled her front entry way and watched the plumber take out and replace her sink. She also trimmed two million bamboo shoots in her back yard. She also taught the Freshman academy so some of you may have met her already. She is a graduate of Sprague High School and enjoyed looking at the old yearbooks with you.

She also traveled back East and studied some American History with other teachers from across the United States. She learned a lot about early American History at Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. One night, she was nearly mugged when she walked back to her hotel on a secluded path. She outran her attacker instead of beating him off with her handbag. The incident was captured on video. When she asked the police officer if she looked "ok" while she ran away, he didn't say anything. She asked the officer if she looked like she could try out for an Avenger film, and again he didn't say anything. Well, I guess that answers why she's back at school teaching both 9th and 10th grade history.Mrs. Olsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06248224352761338022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703694816476330359.post-78529070866459299282019-06-14T09:48:00.003-07:002019-06-14T09:51:07.456-07:00Have a great summer!

Hope all my students have a nice summer in beautiful Oregon. Thanks for being such a nice group of students. It was a pleasure to have you in class.

This summer, Mrs. Olsen will be traveling and going to Colonial Williamsburg with other teachers to learn about American History. She hopes that she will learn some more tips about teaching and looks forward to meeting with teachers from across the country. Colonial Williamsburg is a "real" town that closely resembles the way that early Americans lived during the time of the 13 colonies, in the 1700s. She also hopes to go out to Jamestown and up to Yorktown.

She will also spend the summer with her dogs, Winslow and Sophie. Of course, the two cats Joey and Bumbles will only spend time with her if they feel like it. Most of the time, they will ignore her.

President Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) was raised in Oregon after his parents died. He is well-known as the president who presided over the first 3 years of the Great Depression. Hoover flags and Hoovervilles and Hoover blankets were all part of the popular criticisms of President Hoover.

However, Hoover had another reputation--and that was "Master of Emergencies." During the years after World War I, Hoover saved the lives of millions by overseeing the Belgium and Russian food relief program. When asked if he was not thus helping Bolshevism, Hoover retorted, "Twenty million people are starving. Whatever their politics, they shall be fed!" His engineering background helped him oversee an unprecedented movement of food supplies to help people whose lives hung in the balance.

As part of a thank-you, Belgium women took the flour sacks and returned them to the United States, filled with beautiful embroidery, and yes, Belgium lace at the edges.

Years later, after World War II, President Hover was again called out of retirement. Even though President Truman was told to not have anything to do with Hoover, Truman invited Hoover to the White House and asked him to lead the relief effort. Again, President Hoover traveled the world tirelessly helping with food distribution to starving millions.

Students are learning about the fall of the Russian Royal family, and the beginning of the communist government in Russia...which would be renamed the Soviet Union.

The immediate members of the royal family were all killed at Ekaterinburg, Siberia, in the summer of 1918. Their bodies were hidden in the ground, after the bones were dissolved. Despite the imposter, Anna Anderson, who for decades claimed she was the lost princess Anastasia, it was known that the entire family had perished. Their demise had been detailed by one of the assassins who bragged about his role to the American Haliburton.

Russian Royal culture continues to influence cultural and fashion trends. The imperial easter eggs, the richness of the traditional dress, and the beauty of the four royal sisters belongs to a different time. Many of the Romanov jewels were sold abroad to raise money for Stalin's great industrialization of Russia: the two five year plans.

A new imperial egg was rediscovered recently. It's quite a story!
We are well under way in our study of World War I. Students have learned about the start of the war, Trench warfare, and the various weapons that were created during the war.

We also discussed and looked at a variety of war posters from the era, including the one above. Look carefully and you will see that the Germans have made their way to Kansas, killed the old man farmer, the grandma, and are about the kill the young farmer and sexually abuse his wife...yes it is all there, and men better enlist to stop the enemy. Students will be copying a poster during some time in class while we continue to learn more about the course of the war. We've taken a look at the distinctive German war helmet, the Picklehaube which is easily identifiable in many of the posters.

When I was a child, the old timers still called the Germans "Huns" and yes, even the Japanese were sometimes called "Japs." This was a different era, and many of my uncles had served in World War II and had bitter memories about the war that took so many of their comrades.

Also, the idea of going off to war in World War I was not that popular in America. Many called it a "Britishman's war," and the nightmare of losing a son in a far off battlefield, when there wasn't universal support, foreshadowed similar conflicts during the Vietnam War.Mrs. Olsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06248224352761338022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703694816476330359.post-41576564487127006532019-01-24T10:17:00.001-08:002019-01-24T10:17:51.592-08:00Titanic and its role in historyEveryone is riveted by the story of the Titanic, which sank in the North Atlantic on April 15th, 1912.
Over 1500 passengers died. The story has many gripping elements: women and children were loaded into the life boats first, it was going too fast, and great changes in maritime law were a result of the tragedy.
When I was young, my grandfather, who was born in 1900, told me how he went to hear a fireman speak about the ordeal in Albany, Oregon. The fireman had survived the ordeal by swimming in the ocean and wearing a fur coat. My grandfather paid 25 cents to hear the man speak. I was always intrigued by the picture of this man swimming around in a fur coat and wondering why he didn't sink!

The story is also much more: there was a rivalry between Germany and England in the luxury ship lines. Germany had the four fastest ships at the time, with the Deutschland ocean liner being the leader. Countries supported the building of these ships, because, in case of war, they could always use them for troop transports. A few of my students have been down to see the Queen Mary ocean liner, which is moored in Long Beach, California. It was repainted and renamed the Grey Ghost, and took thousands of troops across the Atlantic to Europe in World War II. Even during the Falklands war, the British government took the Queen Elizabeth II ocean liner out of private service and had it re outfitted as a troop transport, then, after the war ended, it returned to service.

Historians also point out that the Titanic foreshadowed many events---the clash of Mother nature with technology, and the blind faith in man's hubris or pride in his achievements. Of course, in a few years, Europe and many other parts of the world will face the upheaval of World War I, with millions dead and catastrophic destruction.Mrs. Olsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06248224352761338022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703694816476330359.post-26140195682015559492019-01-08T14:52:00.001-08:002019-01-08T14:52:17.565-08:00The last Queen of Hawaii, Queen Liliuokalani

Students in 9th grade history have been learning about imperialism. They have learned how the United States annexed Hawaii. Even today, there are many groups who seek Hawaiian Independence.

Queen Liliuokalani was the last queen of Hawaii. She was born in 1838 into the Hawaiian royal family. She took the throne in 1891. The United States had earlier forced a constitution, which was nicknamed the "Bayonet Constitution." When she attempted to write a new constitution, she was arrested and placed in Iolani Palace. In 1895, she was forced to give up her throne.

The memories of Queen Lil and Hawaiian independence are a bittersweet story. She composed the Hawaiian anthem, Aloha "oe" which is a very popular song. It originally means the goodbye of a sweetheart, but it is very symbolic of the loss of the Hawaiian islands to American influence.

Queen Lil never forgot her country. She is still considered "our Queen" in Hawaii. She died in 1917, at the age of 79.

Many 9th grade students have been been to Hawaii. I even have a few students, from time to time, who have Hawaiian ancestry--which is a cool heritage to have.Mrs. Olsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06248224352761338022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703694816476330359.post-73500718129608646792018-12-05T15:35:00.000-08:002018-12-05T15:35:31.808-08:00African Americans in the post Civil War SouthIn August of 1955, fourteen year old Emmett Till went to visit his uncle and cousins in Mississippi. He was warned before he went there to "behave." This meant, of course, behaving like a second class citizen in the segregated Southern states. He was told not to look at white people in the eye, or act forward, or draw attention to himself in any way.

The facts are unclear, but Emmett may have playfully whistled at a white woman in a grocery store while he shopped with his cousins. Two days later, he was pulled from his bed and taken away, where he was beaten, mutilated and shot. His body was pulled from the Tallahassee River a few days later, maimed beyond recognition.

Emmett Till's brutal murder is to the Civil Rights Movement as Pearl Harbor was to the start of World War II. His body was returned to Chicago for burial. His mother demanded that the coffin be open so she could see for herself what had been done to her son. She then said that she wanted the coffin open...so that the 50,000 mourners would also see the truth of the segregated South.

A few months later, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus. When asked, years later, what she was thinking at that moment, she said: I was thinking about that boy, Emmett Till, and I just couldn't go back.
Students in 9th grade and 10th grade cover the era after the Civil War, when lynching, murder and terrorism of African Americans was not uncommon. Mrs. Olsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06248224352761338022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703694816476330359.post-61350297456333149982018-11-07T12:46:00.004-08:002018-11-07T12:48:46.341-08:00Immigration to America

The great wave of immigration came to America through Ellis Island from 1892 through the 1950s. Though Ellis Island is now closed, the port of entry for most Americans is through our southern and northern borders, or in an international airport.

When I moved to Canada in 1984, I also went through the immigration process. I was first given a green card, then I became a landed immigrant, and finally, because I was a school teacher, it was required that I obtain Canadian Citizenship after I taught in the schools for seven years. I studied very hard for my citizenship exam. Since 2001, I returned to the United States, but I still hold dual citizenship though the United States only recognizes by birth citizenship. I was born in Salem, Oregon.

Students in 9th grade will be reading a book through the first week of December called the Circuit. It is by Francisco Jimenez and it is about a family of Mexican migrant workers and the obstacles they face as they work in the United States. It is an outstanding book, a true story, and is an opportunity for students to gain empathy about others' experiences when they journey to a new country. The family in the book comes to America "illegally" but we will learn how many changes have been made since then. This book is not a political statement by me, as the teacher, but a window into many challenges that people face when they come to a new country. Parents are welcome to ask for a copy to read---we have a few copies available for them to check out.Mrs. In the time of the Robber Barons, one man, Andrew Carnegie, was the closest associated with Vertical Integration. To ensure that Carnegie Steel made the maximum amount of profits, he owned the trains, ships, iron ore fields, and coal fields for his tremendous steel works.

Carnegie later gave money to communities around the world for libraries. As of October, 2018, there are 17 Carnegie libraries in Oregon communities---that is, the libraries are still housed in the buildings that Carnegie helped to pay for. Salem, Oregon received money from the Carnegie library grants, which helped to pay for half of our library (the community had to pay the rest).

Andrew Carnegie was just one of the Robber Barons---who liked to be called Captains of Industry, instead. The names Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, Vanderbilt are other famous families of this era. As an introduction to this era, students viewed a shortened version of the recent Saturday Night Live skit, where Abraham Parnassus, an oil baron, teaches the students to Crush their Enemies during Career Day. I was a bit surprised to hear the same words used in the brief Rockefeller film clip the students viewed as we were taking notes. Some of the students did a pretty good imitation of Mr. Parnassus words of advice, CRUSH your ENEMIES, when he described how he got ahead in the oil industry. Ninth grade students are now learning about the early Industrial Revolution and the effect it had on children. They have also viewed a film about a young girl, Lyddie, who lived and worked in an Industrial Revolution Cotton Mill town.

Students also learned about the good earl, Lord Shaftesbury, who chose to use his background of wealth and education to make conditions better for children and their families in England during the middle of the 19th century. Lord Shaftesbury's tireless reforms changed history.

This etching shows Lord Shaftesbury going down into the mines himself. He saw the young boys and their mistreatment and spoke about it in Parliament. There, no one could question him about his information--for he had been in the mines and seen the abuse of young people with his own eyes. His testimony helped to contribute to the passing of important reform legislation, including the Mines Act of 1842.

Mrs. Olsen is back at Sprague, ready and willing to teach 189 Freshman students history.

Mrs. Olsen is a graduate of Sprague High School, and though she looks about 29, she can remember the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the Moon landing. That's a lot of history since then.

For the past several years, after teaching AP classes, she has been devoting herself to Freshman classes. You will learn a lot of things this coming year and you should find the class very interesting.

This summer, she visited Japan for several weeks. She was hoping to become a zombie, because she is fond of Japanese zombie films, but that did not happen. No one bit her. Instead, she visited several Japanese schools and went to Kyoto and Nikko where she saw the shrine in the picture above. She also brought back a lot of incense, so her house now smells like a shrine and her two dogs and two cats think that she is worshiping them.

She at a lot of Sushi and other things like entire fish, eyeballs and all. It was a great experience. We are fortunate to live in Oregon and enjoy the beautiful Sprague campus, surrounded by trees and parks.

I will be emailing parents and students every week or so just to keep them informed about what we are doing. I know this will be a great year as usual!

We will start this year reading a great book about a boy growing up in a New York tenement called Finn Reardon. This will be one of many books we will read this year. I'm looking forward having a great year in my room, Room 161.

Well, it's a wrap for the summer, with students finishing their exams this week. I hope that all my students have a great summer. We finished with World War II and I warned all students to be careful if they run into any FUGO bombs while out hiking in the great Northwest Forests. After learning about the people who were killed on May 7 1945 near Bly, Oregon, students are well aware that a FUGO bomb could still turn up...and if so, it would be a remnant from when the Japanese sent over the bombs to start forest fires in the United States.

Mrs. Olsen will also be traveling this summer to Japan. This has been on her bucket list for some time, so wish her luck. If she doesn't come back, she could be killed by a bullet train, or a Japanese zombie, or better yet, she will get lost in the forests of Mt. Fuji, and her restless spirit will haunt the tourists who visit there. Hopefully, though, she will come back in one piece.

Japanese culture has always been of high interest to her, including the beautiful temples and shrines. She will also visit some Japanese schools and some of their major businesses. Ask her what her trip was like when you come back in the fall.

Most of all, thank you students for being such great kids! You were a delight to teach. If you miss Mrs. Olsen, you might want to take a trip out to the goodwill bins on Portland Rd, where she will be looking for treasures to share with her students next year. You can grab some things for yourself, and also say hi and see how her summer is going.
Most of all, she has great hopes for her pumpkins. This is the year she is convinced she will have an abundance of large pumpkins because of the amount of horse manure she has been hauling into her pumpkin patch. If you thought she stunk near the end of the year...this could be the reason. She'll be posting her pumpkins on instagram.
When I was growing up, my parents revered President Roosevelt. However, I did know that President Hoover had grown up in Oregon, and was raised in Newberg where his home is still a visitor's center.

One of the projects that began in the Hoover administration was Hoover dam, which was, at the time, the largest dam in the world. It remains an engineering marvel. There was a controversy about the name: though the original name was Boulder Dam, it became referred to as Hoover dam, in honor of the president who was in office at that time. It was only in 1947 that the name Hoover dam was officially assigned to the dam, at it remains Hoover dam to this day.

Most of my students have not had an opportunity to visit it...and I only remember seeing it when I was six years old! However, I guess the fact I remember it must have been a big deal! I do remember the terrific height of the dam. I was always terrified of heights.

We were able to watch a video clip of Hoover Dam from the air, and it still looks spectacular!
In 9th grade history, students are learning about the changes to society after World War I. They have seen some of the "Dada" creations and also the new dresses of Chanel. They have also seen this picture of the famous Josephine Baker in her banana skirt. Josephine Baker was an American woman who traveled to Paris. She lived there with other artists and writers who became known as part of the "lost generation," artists who were disenchanted and searching for meaning after the devastation of World War I.

She danced in a show called La Revue Nègre, it proved to be a turning point in her career. Amongst a compilation of acts, Josephine and dance partner Joe Alex captivated the audience with the Danse Sauvage. Everything about the routine was new and exotic, and Josephine, boldly dressed in nothing but a feather skirt, worked the audience into frenzy with her uninhibited movements. She was an overnight sensation.

Just as Picasso and cubism borrowed from African elements, Josephine also paid homage to her African roots. Though she will always be known for her iconic look during her 1920's dance revue years, her later years were just as interesting....she went on to adopt 12 children from different ethnicities. She became a champion of human rights and opposed racism. She continued to live in France, but her older years were filled with support for causes that addressed injustice in the world.
